The geometry of chocolate
Hello everyone!
In the first day of class, we saw a TEDx of Nigel Nisbet, "The Geometry of Chocolate", which really inspire me.
The geometry of chocolate: Nigel Nisbet at TEDxOrangeCoast
Nisbet explains that he arrived to class and there was not any student motivated for his subject and he did not know what to do with them until one day he thinks in make them a riddle: "Why make a chocolate bar in the shape of triangular prism?". Anyone understood it, but searching information and helping between them, they founded the solution: the bar of chocolate was like this because the producers save money in this way. So in this moment, the geometry joins with the economy. And that is how Nisbet decided to teach geometry, through maths problems of the real live.
I think that Nisbet is an example for a lot of teacher, because sometimes we just get into the routine and we forget what Education is about, so we focus on the concepts and books and we forget that we have to teach students for the real live.
Geometry is something that is all time in the real live, so we can not teach it to the students through a book and mathematical concepts. In Primary, we have to involve to the students in real live, give them motivation and a meaningful learning.
In my next post, I will tell you an example that I carry out with the students of my practicum some time ago.
I hope you like the TEDx video!
